How many here live in other countries other than USA?

Got something on your mind? Get it off your chest! Talk about anything here...well almost anything.

How many here live in other countries other than USA?

Just wondering.

Don't have to say what other countries if you don't want to say. Yes Or USA works too.

I do, so yes.

Thanks, Amalthea and MissWong.

Guess posters are shy even vaguely saying what country they reside but lots of websites give you little flags that you can show, same as genders you can show on your profile. I forgot to say I am part of the European Union :)

Was wondering how many different countries are represented on this website.

I need to ask a kiwi to say it!
I get told by brits that I sound kiwi or Australian and I get told by kiwis I sound like the queen
I also talk super slow and will change the way I say words depending on what I’m hearing around me.
The French assume from seeing and hearing me that I’m German or Eastern European occasionally I get Russian

The Queen's English? That's quite the slap from your fellow Kiwis. Americans generally think I sound British while the British think I'm German, so I'm in a similar predicament.

I also talk super slow and will change the way I say words depending on what I’m hearing around me.
I speak fast, but otherwise I adapt to my setting in a similar fashion. It has gotten to the point where I have "forgotten" my original accent and just speak a kind of jumbled blur.

The French assume from seeing and hearing me that I’m German or Eastern European occasionally I get Russian
That's a compliment, though. And it could be tied to the Slavic pronunciation of "i" when speaking English.

Chur bro

I'm sure she'd be berated for speaking the Queen's English as well, and that distinctive pitch almost makes her sound Sowf Efriken. But I have made that mistake before, in Amsterdam of all places, confusing a Kiwi for an Afrikaner.

One thing, though. If chur is originally cheers, distorted by Maori and local slang, then isn't there a case to be made for fush n chups? :P

Give us a recording as well :D so you think I sound kiwi? Or more south africain? I have had south africain before mentioned.

That’s how I feel, a jumbled blur, I have no idea what my accent is but I sound Slavic with my “I”s?

Lol, Chur probably did come from cheers, I need to pay attention to how maoris say it, there’s alaways been a Pakeha way and a Maori way of saying things in NZ
But yeah give us a recording as well :D

I grew up in one part but had to move to get a job I wanted in another part. It would make me feel lonelier if I didn't have a lot of relatives and friends living here too, and after my dad passed I wanted to move, have a change. It is nice you can visit every few years.

You sound more Sowf Efriken, to be honest. It's hard to explain, but your speech is direct and matter-of-fact. With Kiwis, I think of Breet (Bret) and Juhmine (Jemaine) from Flight of the Concords and their atonal, stumpy sentences, which are all-too-often ended with an "eh."

That’s how I feel, a jumbled blur, I have no idea what my accent is but I sound Slavic with my “I”s?
In retrospect, I'll have to stick with Afrikaner. I think those who spot a Slavic "i" in your speech simply haven't met the many international variations of English.

Lol, Chur probably did come from cheers, I need to pay attention to how maoris say it, there’s alaways been a Pakeha way and a Maori way of saying things in NZ
The Pakeha and Maori overtures go well beyond my reach. You'd might as well be referencing fantasy worlds with artificial languages. The Kiwi pronunciation "uh" (ə) is the result of a gliding vowel, which is explored on Wikipedia:
The difference in frontness and closeness of the KIT vowel ({ɪ̈ ~ ə} in New Zealand, {i} in Australia) has led to a long-running joke between Australians and New Zealanders whereby Australians accuse New Zealanders of saying "fush and chups" for fish and chips and in turn New Zealanders accuse Australians of saying "feesh and cheeps" in light of Australia's own KIT vowel shift.
But your pronunciation was clearly ɪ and not ə.

But yeah give us a recording as well :D
I should record a few lines and perhaps read something formal to catch me off guard. I'll take requests from available books or manuscripts.

Thanks all. I will look up the state nickname then, I don't click online links so I can't hear your voice link, Nostalgic, sorry. Aussie_Musician I think she was being thoughtful mentioning you and others so I would know where others who never posted in here are from. Can not tell if you are trying to be funny, or rude, but also your profile says where you are from so you don't want people to guess either. ;) Texas is a huge American state, @raymond123, is it horribly hot in the summers? I had a Maori friend in high school, I didn't really pick up on her accent until she called the teacher Mess (Miss) She had been in Australia for a while so her accent blended.
My husband has an uncle who travels to Asia often, and he has somehow picked up an American accent. It's really weird considering he has never been to America.

Yeah I remember living in Australia for a year when I was 16, asking my co workers for a pen was a nightmare, they kept thinking I wanted a pin
But I came home to NZ and it was vice versa as I picked up a slight accent and blended everything lol
I think maybe I just sound like a posh kiwi? I pronounce things better out of habit do French people understand me :P

Maybe plan a vacation for next summer with some friends( that might be costly). So many tourist opportunities there and maybe go to NY too.

From dreamyskies thread, it seems it is equally balanced between USA and other.

There was a Portuguese guy active in 2012, Paulo, but his contributions were subpar. He could barely string two sentences together. And I'd be surprised if any Southern European ever ended up on DM again. The Anglo-American context just isn't that appealing to them.

tropicalheatwave wrote:It would be interesting to see a more diverse background of people.
No, it wouldn't. I actually think it would make DM worse. Try any of the multitude of political discussion boards that exist online, and you'll end up in a quagmire of conspiracy theories and cultural myopia. But we needn't go that far. We could use DM's post history as an empirical treasure trove of incompatibilities, ranging from Varzandeh's Islamic interpretations of the dreams of Westerners, which are hit and miss, to Malek's advances on underage teens.

Unlike travel and face-to-face interaction, online communication brings out our worst sides.
