How can I stop lucid dreams?

Postby Donedreaming on Sat May 12, 2012 6:40 am

If what I think a lucid dream is, when you are aware that you are dreaming, how can I stop them? I have had them for at least 5 yrs, but they occur more frequently now. Whenever I have one it is very unpleasant, and, actually scary, with a very helpless feeling. They always happen at home, but they have occurred in different parts of the house. In each, I KNEW I was asleep. I would ALWAYS try to wake myself up. In most, there was some sort of scary/bad thing happening/ about to happen. I would try to talk (and on some level I could hear myself groan or something in my sleep); move , usually an arm, and was never successful. I have been able to make myself snort/ snore, and it at least brings me more conscious. I would like these dreams to STOP. How?

Sounds like your talking about nightmares. You often become lucid during nightmares because you recon there is many strange and supernatural events occurring, which would never happen in real life. As to how to wake up, for me simply focusing on waking up is enough for me to do so, if this does not work for you, then I am not sure how to.

There is no way to stop yourself from dreamin lucidly. However there are ways to cope with nightmares. These are mine:
1) wake yourself up (I can do this naturally, if you practice a lot I'm sure you can too.)

2) beat up the monsters/what's scaring you. (most of the time I can do this, just give yourself powers. This too will take practice, but once you can make yourself more powerful than the things in your nightmares, it will give you a feeling of empowerment rather than helplessness. Tip: To get a power to work, you have to BELIEVE You can do it, and have confidence that it will work. If you lack either of those, it won't!)

3) close your eyes (before I learned how to wake myself up, this was why I would do as a child. Simply close your eyes while in your dream. Many times this will wake you up. Of course ive gotten to the point where that doesn't work for me anymore, but hopefully it will work for you!)

4) be in control (take command of the situation. Often times when I was younger I'd end up getting mad at whatever was chasing me and command it to stop; surprisingly most of the time it works and the thing will listen)

5) humor!! (this is a HUGE thing! Laugh at your fears! Make a joke out of everything! I can't stress this enough! Act like your nightmare is a parody of a scary movie. Have you ever seen Scary Movie? If you have, act like the people in that do, haha. Often this can change the entire mood of the dream. The more frightened you are, the scarier your dream will get. It could be something as simple as bumping into a monster and going "nope. Nope. Ain't nobody got time fo this!" and just turning around. It really helps, trust me)

I hope some of these techniques will work for you! Being able to dream lucidly during a nightmare is a blessing, because you can KNOW that it isn't real, and use powers to change things up. (I'll have nightmares where my family is dying, and since I know I'm dreaming it is WAY less distressing!) good luck, and I hope you find the more enjoyable side of lucidity soon!
