Dooms day prepers? Emergency kits?

Postby KRSTYSTLCLR on Wed May 02, 2012 12:22 am

Any dooms day prepers here on DM? I just finished an earthquake/ emergency kit. Should have done this a long time ago. Just one week of food and water and expanded first aid box. Better that doing nothing though.

I've got guns for every scenario. I'll be able to secure the goods I need in a worst case scenario. :D

No, we do not have any kits prepared or food stocked incase of. I will keep my faith and pray, sometimes it is your turn and no matter how well prepared you are nature sees fit to take you out. How many guns do you have, Guardian? More hand guns over shotguns/rifles?

As a collector, I have enough axes, daggers, swords and hammers for a small army ;) Collecting weapons is one of my hobbies and i got pretty old stuff, including a centuries old hunting knife and a tomahawk(axe).
About food supplies, i know enough about hunting, fishing and edible plants to be able to survive for a while.

@ Guardian lol  I'm glad you aren't from my neck of the woods.

@ Shara, where are you from again Shara? I thought it was New York or some big city. I used to think the same as you, but last year, Pasadena, CA. had power interruption for over two weeks in some areas due to wind storms that took out a lot of trees. We have a lot of earthquakes too, so I finally decided to make that kit for small emergencies. I remember during the Northridge earthquake, there were gas mains and water mains broken. Stores were raided of almost everything including water. Seems water is the first thing to go in any emergency. I think it was hurricane Andrew that store owners were gouging the price of gallons of water to $4 and up. I'm sure it happens with other emergencies as well.

@ Vulcanoid, like guardian you prefer to use weapons to get by. Just curious, do you have the guns to protect what is yours or to take what isn't in an emergency?

Hunting and foraging is good. I know hubby would bring home the meat for the family. We have a great garden started too. Not necessarily for a dooms day lol.., just for pleasure.

I think Guardian is preparing for the zombie invasion. :) No, I am not from New York, I would probably use the bbq if the outage went in the warmer months, even in fall-- same for no heat, can get by if not the winter. Two weeks would be a long time to adjust how you live but I think I could get through it if I did not over react, people do go crazy with looting and sometimes even neighbors can turn on each other if the stress levels get too high. California has so many earthquakes, when staying elsewhere on vacation was the only time I experienced a mild earthquake. I would worry about tornadoes.

I live way out in the country so it's not so weird to have all this. A garden full of vegetables and herbs. I'm also trying to learn to save and grow from my own seeds, so far not very good at it. We're looking into getting chickens. My husband hunts everything, we live off deer meet in the fall. Him and his buddies get together and put in meat to makes hundreds of pounds of sausage to freeze. I really want to get a beehive going, not really sure how to go about that. I want them so they'll pollinate all my veggies and for the honey. All in all I'm trying to learn to live off the land and not be so dependent on super stores.

Oh, and I collect books on historical and scientific things to preserve all we've learned, no more internet if the power goes out. I hope the end of the world doesn't come, but it's better to be prepared than unprepared.

I like that. I'm thinking along the same lines, but I live in the burbs. My dream is to purchase a large amount of land in the next 5 years. Preferably in the country. Maybe somewhere like Montana, Wyoming or Colorado. We want a simpler life. Much like what you seem to have.

You can always vertical garden! I bet it would be beautiful out in those states, but maybe a little isolated and lonely. It can get like that where I live. Every other day or so I have to go into town or I'll go nuts. But over all it is very peaceful and slow out here. It is nice :)

Ohh, I'm not in a big city, our house has a 7500 sq ft lot. We do have room for a decent garden. I'll post pics when the garden gets more mature. So far we have 4 kind of tomatoes, corn, squash, pumpkins and watermelon, jalapeno plant, carrots, potatoes, brown onions, garlic, oh and starting a new area for strawberries. We have and orange tree, peach tree and champagne grapes that produce sweet but small white grapes, and tons of them! I want to start an herb garden and put in a raspberry or blackberry bush too. I wish I could grow coffee plants and tobacco, but the climate is just not right. We have deer in the mountains very close to my home, it's tough terrain, but we get a dear a year..lol. Most of it we give away, but this year I want to make jerky with a bunch of it. Hubby takes trips out of State almost every year for Elk. Can't wait to taste one though. :D

Seems like you're already living the simple life to me! Sounds like you have a lovely garden :) I would love to have citrus trees, but I'm not sure if they'd survive through the winter. You give your deer meat away :o we use it all: ground deer meat, stew meat, hams, although I'm not brave enough to try making stock out of the bones. It's all good! Never thought to make jerky with it though, that could be an interesting experiment. Gonna have to try that this fall.

While I don't really believe there will be a dooms day, it is a good idea to stock up on things. We did have servere flooding in Queensland in January 2011, so we mostly stocked up on long life milk and canned food like spagghetti and fruit. The flooding wasn't a big deal where I live, but the surrounding roads were cut off for a couple of days so there was no fresh food coming in.

Now as for the house I'm living in, the fence is probably not going to keep out zombies if it fails to keep my dogs in the yard. It's a little too expensive to replace at the moment but it is on my list of things to do. My husband has also taken up shooting as a hobby, so he is in the process of getting a few guns, although here in Queensland if you own a gun, it needs to be registered to someone with a licence and it MUST be stored in a gun cabinet with the ammunition in a seperate compartment. Again these things aren't exactly cheap.

Priceless one Venus!

How about water? I saw a great little gizmo that looks like a straw with a cup and lid. The straw has a little purifying device on it, so you can basically have safe water where ever you are. I didn't buy one, but I have been buying extra water in gallon bottles.

LifeChanges wrote:You give your deer meat away :o

Lol... well we don't have a lot of room for the whole deer. I would say we keep about 40 lbs of it. Hubby and my sons always have people that want deer meat when they find out that they hunt. Like I said, I want to keep more of it this year and make jerky, but now I'm curious...how do you make sausage? Where do you get the spices and casing? I'm game to give it a try. :)

All though i have a plan.

You will need :

A friend who can fly a plane
food
water
car
directions
Weapons

Steps
1) collect your food, water, and weapons

2) Make sure you have a clear path to your car. If not, make it that way by shooting down any zombies on your way.

3) have your friend fly you to a pre -planned zombie free island.

4) Enjoy the rest of your days.

You put all your deer meet you have: shoulders, legs, whatever you have, and grind them with a meet grinder (with spices) and as it comes out you have the casing over the opening. Twist once you get a link as long as you want, and keep going till you run out of meet. We get our casing local, i'm not sure about other places. I don't know the exact seasonings they put into it. There's definitely mustard seed, fennel seed, red pepper flakes, salt, whatever strikes your fancy. You can smoke or just freeze them as is.

My mum did a big suitcase kit after the Christchurch quakes. She's in Wellington.

I don't have a kit.

I could probably throw a shoe or two...

I have a few razors in my room, a stake and a few pairs of scissors. I do have a bottle of white spirit too in here. Not exactly dooms day kit material unless I'm planning on a massive fire or getting high.

That's funny because I had a dream last night that involved the Mayan Calender and Solar flares both hitting us this year. I woke up sitting in bed thinking "WE NEED MORE WATER"! I think this prepper thing is getting to me.

the disaster i worry most about is tornadoes, since i do live in tornado alley. a major earthquake is also possible in this area, as well as flooding, but i don't worry as much about those things. other than that, not much else concerns me, so i don't care about emergency preparedness plans.

i don't know what the hell is up with all this shit about a zombie apocalypse. the only "zombies" i see, which are everywhere, are all these people who are addicted to their goddamn phones and waddle around aimlessly or swerving on and off the road as they are texting, all the while not paying attention to what or who is around them. i almost wouldn't mind shooting some of those.

yes. when i was still living at my mom's house, one came right through the neighborhood. i was home alone, hiding in the bathroom (we have no basements around here) and heard it either hop over or skirt by. i think it just hopped over the neighborhood, because for the most part, the damage around was light. it did destroy a warehouse less than a half mile away, and caused greater damage (and fatalities) to the north. it was rated an EF2, and if i am not mistaken, i think it reached EF4 status later on. so yeah, i was lucky, and now i am not fond of severe weather. there have also been other tornadoes in the neighboring towns.

no. most homes in the area have no basements, so if i am ever in the path of an EF4-5, i'm probably screwed.

^ and a bag of chips! Lol. Yes you are. :blowingkisses: Hey, I'm taking your lead on the medical books and herbal books and such. I think that's important. I've been a bit knowledgeable about herbal remedies, but I really need to hit the yard sales and used book stores for more of that kind of stuff.

I've never been to concerned with the end of the world stuff, I remember when the millennium rolled around and everyone thought the world was going to end or whatever it was, I remember my mom saying nothing would happen, its all a hoax, and then when it actually came she went around our house and filled the tubs with water and gathered blankets in the basement haha. People just like to over think things and will believe anything you tell them. The only thing I'm concerned about is how many people actually believe the world is going to end this december, and what they are going to be willing to do to themselves or others in the days before. I've heard a few people say they don't want to die that way and they would rather take there lives into there own hands, so I'm a little the scared the suicide rates are going to rise that month, or that people are going to get violent in stores trying to gather supplies.

As far as emergency kits go, I have one in my car. (I drive back and forth on a pretty accident prone highway, that can get hit with some pretty nasty snow storms) It has a couple blankets and an extra jacket, a few candles, some flares, some food and water that is switched our regularly, and some tools. At my house I don't really have an emergency kit, we just have lots of water and canned food on hand in case of a flood, or lightning or snow storm knocking the power out for a few days. At my dads we don't have one either even though we probably should, because he lives in a tornado prone area that gets some nasty storms. The only thing he really has is a place in his basement cleared out in case we need to take cover from a tornado (which hopefully never has to be used).

I haven't even considered all the crazies out there taking their lives. That's just insane.

Well at least you have the car kit. I think that's smart Kali.

It also has some first aid stuff in it... Forgot to say that before, you can buy the actual car kit but I just have a box in the trunk of my car with the stuff in it, and the jacket and blankets are vacuum sealed so its not like it takes up a lot of space, but its always good to have. I would rather have it and hopefully never have to use it, than not have it and possibly need it.
