The weather has been extremely whacky by me. We had a hurricane in September, "Irene" (which does happen - but not to this powerful degree), we had snow in October (on Halloween, much to my children's dismay), its been high and low all "winter" (the manic weather that we normally attribute to spring) and its in the high 70's today.

From my perspective - Al Gore was probably right. We put too much greenhouse gasses into the envirnoment, we have used too many of our natural resources and cut down too many trees to not have impacted us on a Global scale in some way.

I am an envirnomentalist in my own way by reducing the waste that me and my family produce. I was a huge advocate of getting rid of styrofoam coffee cups at work (which we did BTW). But at the same time, I realize that it is Human Hubris to believe that we as a species will do something to affect the Universe as a whole.

I believe it was Geroge Carlin who waxed poetic on the subject of plastic, saying that - perhaps, the sole purpose of the human race was to give the Earth plastic. LOL!!

When we have gone into the stars, the Earth will continue, with or without us.

Such positivity from me today, not! LOL!!

Hope all is well!
Take care,

What about global cooling? Anyone? Global warming and cooling are cyclic for this planet. The temperature shifts aren't all that dramatic usually, but sometimes they are. Has anyone heard of the mini ice age of the middl ages? Mother Earth isn't in revolt of green house gases. Mother Earth barely recognizes their existance, except in the form of more plantlife, of course....which...absorbs...CO2. Anyway, one very well linked site to check out for some answers, but feel free to google or wiki global cooling. It was the big scare in the 70's just like warming is now.

Yep more nicer : D!

And to answer the first one it's been whacky. Considering since about a few days ago it was actually snowing, raining, and, hailing at the same exact time! XD
And I do believe that we do cause global warming. O.O

I have seen frozen eggs. You can take the shell off and they still are egg shaped. I would think that you could thaw and eat them. Not sure though. Never tried it.

to Guardian: Global Warming, Global Cooling...same thing...it is an increase in the global climate changes that the scientists are warning us about. From what I have read, the recent changes are sharper and quicker than those of the past thousands of years. We have a record of this in core samples of ice from Antartica. We have done the same in Greenland and the Arctic, but most of that ice has now melted, whoops! The warming causes ice to melt that cools the ocean and stops the ocean currents that keep warmth circulating...so we get more severe heat and more separate severe cold...this causes more violent weather.

So, new day, new question:
What can we do to eliminate racism from the world?
What I have always done is just to treat everyone with respect. That is pretty much it in a nut shell. Hopefully, some of this passes on.

Mike you should go into the Think Tank thread and add to the discussion Bubby brought up on that recent murder in FL. That smacks of racism.

I'd say you accept others for their differences, not fear others.

Hello All,

Wow! OM, what a deep question. I am not sure that there is any good answer to that.

For myself, I try to judge people on an individual basis. Therefore each person I encounter is treated in accordance with their own behavior.

I try to teach my children to look at how people are the same and focus on those things that connect us, as opposed to what makes us different. But they need to find ways to differentiate one person from another, and they do that by mentioning differences.

Unfortunately, I think that racism stems from the fact that most people are afraid of what is different from what they know. I don't really know what it is about certain differences that threatens them or their safety. It is almost as if they lose confidence in their own choices as an individual. Like the fear/thought that somehow knowing a gay guy will make you gay - like you can catch it like a disease.

How do we pacify fears? How can we make people less afraid of what they don't understand?

I think respect, acceptance and compassion are noble to use to govern ourselves to interact with others, but I am not sure how that changes people's minds about what they think.

From my perspective, racism will be eliminated when we meet our first aliens (LOL!). Then we'll have to band together against that "threat" of the unknown. We'll have no room for human racism then. . .

Well, that's my two cents at least!

Take care,

SG

I was raised to respect all people, and to treat others how I want to be treated its simple but you dont see it much. I believe that education is important when discrimination is the topic. What we teach our children is the result for they are our future. If we install good qualities in them they will one day pass them to their children and so on..

I raised my children to respect all people and they do. There are a lot of us who do so. We have changed the world; not completely, but better days are coming.

Something happened on April 4, 1968; something very sorrowful in Memphis, Tennessee...and in response, something very hopeful in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Wikipedia says: On April 4, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy learned of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and gave a heartfelt, impromptu speech in Indianapolis's inner city, in which Kennedy called for a reconciliation between the races. Riots broke out in 60 cities in the wake of King's death, but not in Indianapolis, a fact many attribute to the effect of this speech.

In that speech, Bobby Kennedy said he believed that in 40 years, a black man could become president of the United States of America. He said it in a mostly black inner city area. His black bodyguard told him not to go....Hardly anyone could believe his statement at the time...Riots broke out in my home city of Youngstown, Ohio.

...40 years later, a black man became President of the United States of America. Something happened.

Sadly, the hateful also pass their values on to their children. There is a song that goes: "It's gonna take a lot of love to change the way things are."

That is what it is all about...LOVE!

Peace is possible,
OM

We can't ever eliminate racism, people like to hold onto generations of bigotry, comfortable old shoes they walk around in ignorantly, imo. The older generations won't change their views, so start with educating the children( new generations) and slowly it will get better.

I beg to differ. We can eliminate racism.

You are correct about this:
jojo wrote:start with educating the children( new generations) and slowly it will get better.
We have eliminated slavery. We have improved as a human race in many ways. I remember in the 60s the priests and preachers were calling for the older generation then to hold back their prejudices and hatred. That just holding back would allow the younger generation to get along with each other. I am talking about those who are now 80 to 90 years old or so holding back their negativity from those who are now 50 to 60 years old, like me. I saw this happen in my family and in my community. I am sure that it was not universal, but it did happen and it was wide spread. This has grown to allow a black man to be elected president of the USA, for instance. All of the posters who answered this are in favor of equality and mutual respect. This is a much different world than the one I grew up in....and, as you said, it can slowly get better.

Peace,
OM

Hello All,

I'll be MIA for a bit. It seems as if I'll be going away for business for a week and then off for Spring Break with my kids. But I wanted to let you all know that I'll be back. This forum is so wonderful and I love how we all seem to be able to speak our minds without retaliation and we are able to agree to disagree.

Aristotle said that "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it".

So I'll leave you all with a question, sweet and simple:

If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?

I would love super speed, like Flash. That way I would never be late to anything, I could clean my house in record time and I could go anywhere in the world without having to buy a ticket to ride! I also like invisibility. . . but there is more room for temptation to use it in a less than noble way. :D

Take care and talk to you all soon,

OK, I like your answer about Flash, always admired him. Hmmmm, only one? OK, I would love to be able to read minds. I can get telepathic messages from people who are trying to send them to me, but I mean flat out hear every though someone is thinking.

This could be abused, as all powers could be, but I would use it for good. I admit that I was primarily thinking of protecting myself from people thinking evil thoughts against me, but I would also help people that are not asking out loud for help.

How about anyone else who might read this? How about you?

Absolutely! I hold honesty as an important virtue. Right now, I have an injured knee. It happened at work, so instead of my health insurance paying for it, a government agency (the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation) has to pay for it. The problem is that my employer is fighting the claim, so I have to go through all kinds of legal balogney and appeals process before I can get the surgery that I need. It has now been over 4 months. All I would have to do is lie and say it happened at home, and I could have got it fixed months ago, but I refuse to lie. I want to do what is right.

In the movie, Kingdom of Heaven, there are European knights fighting against Arab knights over Jerusalem. Twice in the movie, some men were knighted. As part of the oath, they said: Tell the truth, even if it kills you. I believe that.

Now, that said..I used to believe in being totally open and honest. Experience has shown me that openness can get you in trouble. People use your personal information against you, for their gain. So, I no longer disclose all my thoughts and feelings and information that I know. It's too bad the world is this way, but it is.

Peace,
OM

good question. it depends on the situation. in a work environment you need to lie. if you don't like your job but your boss asked if you like your job, would you say no? can you honestly express your feelings to a costumer you don't like? has anyone ever been completely honest in a job interview? has anyone ever even been honest with themselves?

i do believe in developing an authentic relationship with yourself before you can develop one with anyone else. but of course thats alot easier said then done. anyone who says they are completely honest is either a liar or ignorant but probably both.

Yes. I fooking hate liars, scammers. They do it to play on others and try to get something.
It's the best policy in relationships, with friends and family and your job.
You do wrong, admit it.
@Trop you can express things honestly without being abusive or hurtful, how ya word things, have to just use some tact, imo.
Even with a boss and you'll earn their respect back.

New Question:

No, I dont.
I think integrity is.
Being honest is too easy and will let you off the hook too easy but integrity is tougher. I can have very high standards and honesty is too wimpy for me.

Example: If a girl starts to date a guy and the guy said that he is not ready to have kids yet so if she gets pregnant she is on her own and he will have nothing to do with it. He is using honesty as an excuse to get him out of responsible. You can be honest with no integrity.
It is Honest but is this the best policy, I think not. He can be honest and get away with this but not with integrity. Integrity has much higher standards. With integrity he is still responsible to the girl and the unborn child even if he wasnt going to have nothing to do with it, integrity will not let him off the hook.

Honesty simply means not lying. Integrity is more demanding and unforgiving in our actions and responsibilities ...it involves discernment, risk and moral reflection and I believe this to be superior to honesty. Being honest isnt saying much in my opinion, esp when it comes to morals. Integrity must be at some risk to you never the other person and it is being aware of the other people and their best interests not yours. If you can easily state the truth usually it is because it is for self- interest, which is ok that is honesty (and we need to defend ourselves from others) but like I said integrity has much higher standards and would be a better policy for the 3 reasons I stated, I mean imagine others being able to see what is best for everyone else and which plans works best for everyone not just self all the time. The ability to see others that is integrity.

Like Trop, I think there is some thoughts you dont say and you cant sugar coat everything because that is like lying. Also what if someone was getting abuse a teen friend by her parents I would hide her and lie to her parents until we got help for them, police, other family members etc. I believe in witness protections which is changing your whole identy. I do believe there are times to lie.

Keep the same question going, cant think of anything right this second.

not for every boss. most bosses will walk all over you if your too honest. i had to lie so many times just to keep my previous job. i've lied to get out of pointless meetings, get extra weeks of vacation with pay, and to avoid conflict with costumers. sometimes you need to lie.

overall, i don't go out of my way to lie, especially when it comes to developing a relationship with people. when i lie its mostly just to avoid conflict or employment reasons.

It depends on the time of year for me. These days my favorite thing is the patio. Hanging with friends. Chilling out with drinks. Music. Grilling of the meat! Sitting around the fire at night in my hoodie, toasting marshmallows and looking st the stars. :lovestruck: @

First, the award for best answer to the honesty question goes to Soul Kiss (if there were awards). Thank you everyone for your honesty in answering that question (unless you were lying  ).

Since you said "thing", I will have to go with my TV. Watching it is one of my favorite ways to relax.

OK, new day, new question....so I am stealing this one from the Get to know each other thread:
What is your favorite and worst parts of spring?..side question...is it called spring all over the world even though the seasons are different, like in the southern hemisphere????

My favorite part of spring is Major League Baseball is back. Let's Go Tribe!!!

My worst part of spring are the bugs, especially the hornets and wasps. Around here there are almost no bugs all winter.

OM

My favorite part of Spring is FLOWERS...lots and lots of flowers. Although I cannot stand bees, hornets and wasps also. I wish they didn't have to be part of nature , but so be it.

Best part of spring is the way the sun makes everything look really colourful and alive. Spring and autumn are the only times of year when being outside is genuinely pleasant for me. In winter it all looks grey and muted and in summer its too goddamn hot.
Worst part would have to be how the clocks change. I hate feeling like I'm sleep-deprived for a few weeks.
(Really had to think for that. Spring freaking rules.)

Welcome back, RP.

When I was driving yesterday, I was overlooking a valley with all the trees budding and some with flower blossoms. All sorts of colors, yet way more subtle and soft than those in the fall. I want to add that to what I like about spring.

So, I am the first poster of the day and I get to ask the new question:

What are your favorite wild animals to watch?

I love all animals. It is always a special thrill to see one that is unusual. I saw a black bear once. That was exciting. I love birds the most; all birds really. Again, it is fun to see an unusual one. But, I would have to say, I like to watch bald eagles the best. (Don't tell the red-tailed hawks that i said that! )

Peace,
OM

We have a nice yard, so we get squirrels, chipmonks, rabbits and lots of birds. I can sit at the window for hours, But I also love going to the zoo and seeing all different animals....I like animals better than humans... :P

What is your favorite thing in your home?

computer/TV.

What is your favorite and worst parts of spring?

favorite - the [usually] mild temps, seeing things turn green again, being able to sit outside.
least favorite - the "other" green shit (pollen) and the havoc it can wreak on my sinuses, having to drag out the lawnmower, severe weather (although tornado season here is actually late november-june)

What are your favorite wild animals to watch?

when it comes to animals i can watch outside, hummingbirds. as far as wild animals on tv, wild dogs.

Well, Misha, you are only supposed to ask the question of the day if you are the first poster of the day, but since you are new on this thread, I am giving you a welcome bending of the rules. (as strange as your question is)

Uhh, ummm... Well, first i checked your profile. So you have daughters. If you had sons, you wouldn't have to ask.

Here is the dirty truth..it's the shake, shake thing. (Usually just shake for me, not so much shake shake  ) I know my wife was grossed out about this when I told her...about 35 years ago. But one drop of urine is not going to cause any health problems. For us, it's just a normal thing. In fact, when I heard that women wipe theirs, i thought it was weird and kind of overkill.

Ok, even though it is a new day, RP asked a good one yesterday with no replies, so let's go with:
rp0059 wrote:if you could have one talent that you do not have what would it be?

I wish I could play music. I can't even read music. I love music. I love to listen to it, and sing. But it is like a foreign language to me....we encouraged all of our kids to learn music in school, which they did. They all ended up in the high school marching band. One of them started a rock band, which was a local success.
