A Woman President?

Got something on your mind? Get it off your chest! Talk about anything here...well almost anything.

A Woman President?

Postby BLUE on Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:46 am

I was present at a conversation between two men I know who happen to be very politically minded. Now I think very highly of these gentlemen and their views. Straightforward kind of guys who would do anything and everything for you if you asked. Now that being said, I was floored when they stated their views on a women president. :o

Not only did they think a women couldn't do the job they didn't think the country was ready for one. And! They think that every woman in the country would vote for her flollowed by the "we are screwed face." :o You fouls see the pmsed jokes coming.

So I gave them my political view. I would never vote for a womaning running for president just because she was a woman. I don't care what race or sex the person is. I only care about they stand for.

Do you think the US is ready to have a woman president?

Depends on the woman, really. The goal it seems to me, should be to find a woman that would be strong enough, smart enough and supported enough so that the fact that she was a woman became irrelevant. The President's impact and ability to lead the country has more to do with their supporting cast, support/cooperation from other politicians, and their ability to make/shape deals that their opponents will support. The "individual" is only a small part of the "presidency" leading the country. The one thing you don't want if you are a proponent of a woman being elected president, is for one that will be disaster to be elected, it will set the ability to get another elected back more than anything else.

Just my thoughts.

As long as it's not Sarah Palin...

It's one of those things that, to me, we as a country ARE behind. Other countries have female presidents. Even Pakistan has had a female prime minister (before her assassination and granted, there were a lot of issues but...). I'm not saying that this alone is reason enough to elect a woman, but to say that we're 'not ready' for a woman president is setting us back about 40 years, don't you think?

it would be something if a priest decides to get his sex changed, and comes to mass to give his/her sermon as a women. or what if a priest reveals that he is really a she?

i personally wouldn't mind a women president. i would like to see a middle eastern person try to get elected as u.s. president.

I assume that by "ready," you're asking if we think a female candidate can be elected and be generally accepted by the U.S. population.

Truth be told, I don't know. I feel it's hard to say. What I do know is that it doesn't matter who gets elected these days. Be they democrat or republican, the presidents in current times turn out to be the same story over and over. This I believe, is because the presidency is in same ways a front. A puppet show, if you will. So I think that even if a woman was elected, it still wouldn't be that much different.

Iv'e always thought about this...i would like to see a women president though instead of another male president.Men are most likely going to say that a female isn't "ready" or isn't "smart enough",and thats expecting coming form some men who say that and think very much ignorant.
I mean look how long it took for women to actually vote?..and some men were very supportive.
Anyways i just wanna be alive when making history.ok?.. :whistling: lol

I think America is ready for a female president. That's not my concern. My big worry is they will do the same thing with a female president that they did with a black president. Obama had no experience in legislating, had no real qualifications, but he's a younger, good-looking, charismatic black man. He's made a lot of mistakes I doubt he would have made had he spent a few years in Congress learning how things really work instead of going off of personal opinions. I don't want them to elect a woman simply because she's electable. I couldn't care less if the right person is young, old, male, female, white, black, asian, Christian, buddist, whatever. I just want them to do what's best for the country, regardless of party affiliation, political blowback or upsetting their donors.

Doubt it. We'll have 2 more black male presidents before a woman becomes president. The men just seem to always overpower the women in the presidential races. I bet that if Clinton had gotten the Democratic nomination over Obama, then McCain would've won.
Just my thoughts- it's gonna be awhile until that happens.

Even people in other countries want him to be president. How many times can you remember supporting a political candidate running in another country? That definitely says something.

To be honest I know nothing of the candidates or about politics in general, I just assume they are all bad.
Yes, it's silly to have an assumption not knowing details but it's just an opinion.

I try to understand it sometimes but I don't think I'll ever understand it

It's just an impression but I thought she wanted to be pres. real bad and still does. Hilary was far more involved than other First Ladies- health care for one. So much so that insurance donated huge amounts to her campaign- they were afraid not to. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see her as the 'retiring' type.

Im ok with a woman for president. I think it would be good for the country.

I think Obama will get re elected and after his 4 years Hilary will run. Truthfully she is very qualified and has a very diverse resume. Bill has alot of respect in both parties and still has political pull. Hilary having been Sec. has a better grasp and famialirity with foreign affairs than anyone running now.

to be fair, there are societies that are matriarchal instead of patriarchal, meaning the women DO wield the power. So it's not fair to say that women have only just gotten rights to do anything...just in most societies. Some native Americans had the women hold the property, which means they had power. Granted, these are minority cases.

While I'll never want to give up my rights I do think there were negative outcomes to the situation.
For example you now need two incomes when you have a kid. I would love to stay at home and look after my son.
I love that I can work and vote but now I don't have the choice to stay home and raise a family.

I'm happier though than I would be without those rights. But with good things comes bad things I guess?

I agree MonStar- Not that we should vote based on gender but that means either gender.

I can't recall when US women gained the right to vote (1918 maybe?). But it wasn't related to being a stay at home mom. Here, that change came after WWII (50's, more in the '60's...). During the war the women had to run the factories/ support the war effort- a matter of survival. This was the first large scale female work-force and many women liked it- especially the extra money. But, the expanded workforce put downward pressure on the price of labor/ upward pressure on inflation such as housing (supply/ demand; what the market will bear); continuing to our present dilemma of needing two incomes to support family. The other related change was that fewer people lived in the cities prior to WWII; there were more family farms and, family businesses in the city/ town. Now monopolies, chain stores... dominate employment- that means having to commute as does greater technological requirements. Although, with computers, there is a rising trend for work inside the home. Less office space saves money for the employer and many will work for less at home (spend less for work too)- childcare, commute, food, clothing...

Lol Nos- You're right about women gaining opportunity in employment, education... that was a big curve too. Now we are talking about the first female president. Women in political office and the courts do increase our voice. But, balancing work and family is very hard! Not like all our domestic/ family needs aren't hard work too! I like watching classic films from the late 40's to 50's. Women are portrayed as independent yet not having to work- everyone knows/ respects each other- the local grocer, the hardware store owner, a milkman comes to their door, high mobility without traffic jams... It couldn't really have been that easy but... :dreams:

I shouldn't complain really as I hate housework and cooking etc. hubby does most of it

In some ways I think it was easier. There were fewer people, less pollution and less competition to meet daily needs. Housing/ gas/ food more affordable. People knew their neighbors, were less afraid and it was easier to operate family businesses. Super stores put main street out of business. I think it had the effect of people feeling more isolated, less trustful and we seem to have less time with family- tired when we get home from work- exhausted by the weekend but we have all our weekend chores- shopping, washing, cleaning and trying to squeeze in some R & R or quality time. When one parent is home, dinner is ready when the other comes home from work and, the household chores aren't jammed into the weekend- nor are we in a rush to get from work to childcare then home to prepare dinner.

      Yep yep and yep.
We cook fast and easy things as by the time we get back from work......
Half the time we don't eat together either.

Monday's I go to sport so bubby feeds, baths and plays with Lucien then eats something in the middle of that
Tuesday's is the opposite, he does sport I take care of Lucien.
Wednesday's. I generally cook while he baths Lucien. Sometimes I'll do sport depending on how lazy I feel.
Thursday is the same as Tuesday
Friday is the same as wednesday although we try and snuggle up to a film (tonight hubby's sick so he's sleeping)
Saturday, clean etc in the morning then big walk and chats since we get no time during the week and Lucien loves being outside.
Sunday hubby runs in the morning and i do some sport at home then relax and another big walk.

Same every week, there's not enough time in a day

LMAO @ Jon! Thatcher was a tough one.

we're still cleaning up after her over here. She made one hell of a mess.

If 'merica were to have a female president, I know i dont know pretty much ANYTHING about the characters in politics over there, but i'd like to vote for Mrs Obama. She's cool, i like her!

If anyone is interested, here are some recent v. historical approval ratings on the three branches of US government.

Congress' approval ratings hit record low:
A Washington-Post ABC News poll conducted Jan. 12-15- 2012 put Congress’s approval rating at 13 percent, a record low for that opinion survey. A Dec. 15-18- 2011 Gallup poll put the approval rate at 11 percent, also a record low since Gallop began its poll in 1974. Independents were more down about Congress than Republicans or Democrats. In December 2011, independents gave Congress a 7 percent approval rating, while Republicans were at 12 percent and Democrats were at 14 percent.

The December 2011 (89%) disapproval rating for Congress exceeded the (Gallop poll) 82 percent-high recorded in August 2007 and March 1992. Since 1974, the average annual congressional job approval rating has been 34 percent. The highest approval rating for Congress was 84 percent in October 2001, a month after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. In December 2011, a record 64 percent of Americans rated the honesty and ethical standards of members of Congress as low or very low, while three-fourths of voters said most members of Congress do not deserve reelection.

Supreme Court Approval Ratings- October 2011: Forty-six percent of those polled said they approve of the Supreme Court’s job, down 5 percentage points from last year and 15 percentage points from 2009. This year’s 46 percent rating is the second lowest since 2000; the lowest approval rating was 42 percent in 2005.

      Presidential ratings:
      Reagan- High: 68 Low: 35 1 year before re-election (first term): 54
Bush (Senior)- High: 89 Low: 29 1 year before re-election (first term): 52
      Clinton- High: 73 Low: 37 1 year before re-election (first term): 51
Bush (Jr.)- High: 90 Low: 25 1 year before re-election (first term): 55
      Obama- -- -- 1 year before re-election (first term): 43

(Sorry the post won't list under headings).

I really agree with the disapproval numbers for Congress. They suck! I think they should all be removed from office and start over again with brand new members. They'd probably get more done...Damn Congress!!!

Lol- Krsty, you must be one of the independent's independent- zero for all. 8-) Those numbers are a strong message but I bet most don't think it applies to them (much like the laws they pass).
