CNN & Fox are media corporations. The purpose of a corporation is to run a business, or businesses, that create a substantial profit for said corporation's shareholders. Profits are the bottom line. The end.
For a media corporation to create such profits, they need high ratings which in turn generates a willingness of other corporations to use media services to advertise products. The advertising of products generates millions upon millions of dollars in revenue to both advertiser and advertisee. These millions upon millions of dollars through various shady and rather clever practices become profits.
To achieve high ratings, people need to be sucked into the vortex and actually want to watch the garbage generated by said media corporations. And this vortexing is done without regard to integrity, morality, honesty or the dissemination of factual information. Entertainment is what the people want and that's what they get. Political commentators are the MCs of the gladitorial arena. It's all bread and circuses and nothing more and to actually sit here arguing about who's good and who's bad means you've taken the bait, bought the hype and are now regular contributors to the big, fat coffers of the media corporations.
But then it's been a long time since entertainment came for free.
