Movies Watched This Year

Postby Kuahji on Mon Feb 07, 2011 1:52 pm

So for the last few years I've been keeping a list of all the books I've read, & I thought it'd be a neat idea to start keeping a list of the movies I've watched as well. So for January here is my list

Perfect Blue
1984
Luther
The Wrestler
Catfish
127 Hours
Persepolis
Clash of the Titans
Paris, Texas
Man Bites Dog
Naked Lunch
Zombieland
Paprika

For originality, I'd highly recommend Perfect Blue, 1984, The Wrestler, Persepolis, Man Bites Dog, and Paprika. Really all the movies on the list I really liked with the exception of Paris, Texas, which is a highly rated movie, but I just could not get into it... it just seemed epically boring to me. Naked Lunch was the strangest one on the list that I watched.

Black Swan was pretty epic :). What did you think of it? All the director's movies are a tragedy (he also made Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, and The Wrestler), so good.

Been meaning to watch the Hot Tub Time Machine for awhile, just haven't gotten around too it.

I really enjoyed Black Swan, it was well done and ending was surprising, well, to me :) I have seen all those other movies you listed by the same director, liked them all except The Wrestler. I don't like Mickey Rourke as an actor at all and prolly why I never gave that movie a chance.

Ha ha hot tub time machine was hilarious, I can give you a link to watch it online, if you want? :whistling:

I looked up the movie you had listed "Catfish" that looks very interesting off the description, was it worth the watch, because if it was I will watch it online this week and let you know what I thought. It says documentary, was it one?

I have so many movies on my "to watch" list, eventually I'll get around to the Hot Tube Time Machine :).

Catfish was pretty good, I enjoyed it. They advertise that it's a documentary, but it's hard to fathom that it's actually real... so there is a lot of controversy about whether it's real or fake. Going into the movie knowing it "might" be fake, might take some of the value away from it, I watched it thinking that it was real & that kept me on the edge of my seat. Either way, still probably enjoyable.

This year?

The Green Hornet...seriously I think that's it. Unless re-watching a movie counts.

How was it? It didn't look too appealing to me, so I never made it out to see it, but a few other people I know said it was pretty good.

It was enjoyable, but the 3D was pretty pitiful. Seemed like more of afterthought just to charge more money.

I found a few places online where I can watch Catfish. So I will watch it at some point this week and review it :P

It was decent. It wasn't something that interested me all that much, the group of people I was with all had really good things to say about it. So yeah, if you're into those sort of movies, you'll probably definitely like it.

In general I'm not really digging the 3D thing too much. I loved it in Avatar, but everything else I've seen in 3D, just seemed like more of a annoyance.

Since last on I also watched:
The Company Men ( really good movie)
Frankie and Alice
Never Let Me Go ( type of movie I love)
and
Catfish ( one you mentioned)- I am thinking it seemed a bit rehearsed in parts and put on to be real, but the whole story was interesting and shows you the level of deception some people will go to online. Very sad, I felt for that women, her life and her obvious loneliness and wanting to leave her small world and escape. Prolly why the guy forgave her too. Overall the movie was well done, obviously not made for a lot of money and I preferred it that way.
What was your take on it?

Alright, new movies watched.

Dead Space: Aftermath For an animated film, I found it to be rather enjoyable romp into the genre of hardcore sci-fi/horror. A good tie in for the games and far better than the first film.

The Mother of Tears An Italian horror film that is the conclusion of what is known as The Three Mothers trilogy by a supposedly "legendary" director. I thought it was terrible.

Green Street Hooligans An action drama starring Elijah Wood as an American journalist who is paid $10,000 to take the fall for a cocaine addict, costing him his degree at Harvard. He moves in with his sister in England where he falls in with a firm (a gang of soccer hooligans) and shit gets crazy from there. I highly enjoyed this film.

It's Kind of a Funny Story I really enjoyed this. I went in expecting a crazy, buddy comedy as per Zack Galifianakis' usual films but was treated to a more subtle brand of humor with a share of decent drama. It got poor reviews, as is the critic standard when someone steps outside their AO, but I enjoyed it and would watch it again. (Yes, this is copied/pasted from the "What's the last movie you watched?" thread)

Dude, if this is a for real, legit list, you're my hero! Lol There are two main things that are awesome about this list 1.) There's so many movies in the list [and great ones, at that!], and 2.) Its got a great range of movies from like every genre and time period!

I love people that can just sit around and watch movie after movie like I can! Unfortunately though, I don't personally know anyone else that watches this many movies, other than myself... :P

Thanks. I have netflix, and a lot of time, so, I just watch film after film. I don't get tired of it. There are just so many films out there to see! I know what you're talking about when you say you don't know anyone who watches so much. Outside of people I talk to on the internet, I don't really know anyone personally who has the same obsession. If you like discussing films in depth, then you should check out awardsdailyforums.com . I'm a user there (Look for BBKing44). :)

Impressive list ... for a philistine. Where's Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979), Bergman's Cries & Whispers (1972), or Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960)? :nodding:

Lol. Cries and Whispers is high up on my Netflix queue, and I hope to see La Dolce Vita soon as well. As for Stalker, it isn't on my queue... but I do have Tarkovsky's The Mirror and The Sacrifice. I'm currently watching a lot of Japanese films (Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu), so it might be awhile before I get to those others.

Sansho the Bailiff (1954) is extraordinary--one of my absolute favorites. So is Stalker.

How about Robert Bresson?

It's funny, Sansho is actually what I have at home right now.

I have some (much anticipated) Bresson on the queue:
Diary of a Country Priest
Au Hasard Balthazar
Pickpocket

That's the trifecta. It only needs Mouchette (1967) to be complete.

Do you watch much silent cinema?
I'm still exploring it, and the 3 silent films that I've seen (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Battleship Potemkin, Man with the Movie Camera) have blown me away.
Upcoming silent films:
The Last Laugh
October
Earth
Sherlock Jr.
The General
The Gold Rush
Intolerance

Marathon maybe? :cabbagepatch:

No, I rarely watch silent cinema, although Lang and Eisenstein are favorites. But I haven't seen Vertov's classic (!). Tsk-tsk ...

Marathon maybe? :cabbagepatch:
That's not a bad idea ... Any suggestions besides the list of silent films?

Well, this is like a one-film marathon, but, have you seen Olivier Assayas' 2010 film: Carlos? It's 5 1/2 hours long and split up into 3 parts. I believe Criterion is releasing the dvds/blu rays. Really good flick!

No, I haven't seen it. Thank you for the recommendation.

How about the ten one-hour episodes of The Decalogue (1989) by Krzysztof Kieslowski?

Ha, I have Netflix too! And now that I just graduated, I've pretty much just lock myself in my room watching everything instantly on there! And I feel the same way, there's just millions of hours of film out there, I mean, that's what movies are there for: to be watched. I get so irritated with my friends that say things like "Why the hell were you watching that? Its like 40 years old!" Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check that site out soon! You can probably look for my username, it'll either be the same one I have on here, or Alaine1203 or something like that... Hahaha

I really liked it, JGyllenhaal is very charismatic, the same way MDamon is in the Adjustment Bureau... so they always seem to be able to engage the movie goer in their movies. I think you prolly would enjoy it.
