Hard Drive Crashed

Dear Dream Mooders,

On Wednesday September 22 2010, the Hard Drive containing the Dream Moods site crashed and severely corrupted the var file system. On that same day, the Dream Moods site was featured on the MSN homepage. The sudden spike in traffic also contributed to the crash. We had to reconstruct the site from back up files. Unfortunately, the forum database was only backed up to August 23 and any data and posts between August 23 and September 22 could not be recovered.

To members who signed up for an account between August 23 and September 22, we regret that you will have to re-register your account.

We sincerely apologize for the downtime and the inconvenience caused.

I am really astonished to the fact that a site like your's does not even have an Emergency Recovery Plan. Moreover ,I 'm amazed that you do not even back up your files on a daily basis. What a signifcant loss of information you have suffered and what a significant loss of confidence, amongst your account holders you have achieved.

Having said the above, I tried to locate this MSN article you say had contributed to such a traffic, evidently causing the crash but to no avail. Hence, I shall be grateful if you would please provide a link to that article or post it here , for the information and benefit of your account holders'.

I'm just curious to know the content of that article that contributed to such damage.

You should also make a mirror site for the forums, a mini version of this one with auto delete, so when it crashes again, and it will, posters can still carry on as they were until you get the main back up.

And not only posts were deleted, all PMs during that time frame were as well, old and unopened.

If you have to disconnect that is a shame but the rule of 18 and over to access should have always
been in effect. Not just the forum on sex either. Many subjects here on DM are of adult nature.
I suppose age discretion into that particular one is a start. I think under 18yr old should be restricted to the dream subjects only. It's obvious why. To many posts here read, 'we have younger members and are advised to be mindful of what they say and talk about.' And yet there are plenty of titles reading adult like titles, comments and overall content is not appropriate for younger than 18. There are plenty of appropriate websites for under 18 viewers. After all sex/erotica is not something a underage 18 should be involved in especially with all the older members posting obvious inappropriately for the younger members(under 18). It makes it more of a bait for trouble because of age members never know who they are talking with, meaning it could be a 14yr old posing as a 19yr old. Its happened to many times. Each member should be responsible for their ability to tell the truth so no one gets hurt. (Although we all know that will never happen, for some reason most teenagers find it impossible to be truthful when it comes to their age. A matter a fact one of the minors could be a webmaster assistant with it to help keep it under control. So everyone is happy and no one is offended.

It is a shame for the loss of information though, that's a lot of great information just "gone". That's OK though it will get built back up quickly, I'm surely not going to give up on coming back. I love this place. Patience everyone, maybe miraculously the info will be recovered.

PS. Also restricting the site to 18+ would cut back on all the one's who cry they were lied to etc. If upon entering certain places/topics it would always be assumed of age members. So that the majority of us over 18 wouldn't have to be so wary. I'm speaking mostly for everything except the actual dream interpretation, nightmare, and relater posts. At very least on all posts new or replies, it would be nice to easily see how old the member is whom one is replying too. Just some thoughts since something are going to have to be rebooted and involve some work/repairs anyway. Why not just go ahead and nip this the bud while the opportunity shows itself.

We will definitely discuss with our webhost about an emergency contingency plan. We did always have the mirror site (www.dreemmoods.com) in the event that the main site became inaccessible.

Yes, we were only backing up our files on a monthly basis, but you are correct that we should increase our back up frequency, at least for the forums where new data is continuously posted.

Wow, i wondered, why my 18+ area pass was revoked, here it is due to a crash. That saddens me, even my posts of dreams have been erased. Now i may never see what someone said to them...--___-- but alas this is only the beginning. The Master will fix the problems and make solutions and better the site, if this never happened then they would never have to adress the situation untill far later down the road. So in some ways thank god for the crash and hope it never happens again.

Another note. Why argue on the announcement post of the hard drive crash. if you are to argue just PM back and forth so everyone else dosent have to wade through the drama just to get answers. Its like two people going to a mall just to stand in the fountain and yell back and forth at each other, so everyone can see. Instead of just doing it privately so no one else has to deal with it, or get involved. Sometimes i really hate the internet.
