Wow, beautifully written Zissou. I'm the same way. There's always some kind of melody in my head, but I get frustrated when I pick up a guitar because I can never replicate it.
I agree, a lot of the mainstream stuff is garbage. There are a few gems out there, but they're out there. You just need to look know where to look.
Sigur Ros? I've never heard of them before. I'll have to check them out.

I haven't taken any courses in music theory either. I usually just pick up my guitar and start playing, messing around with different notes and what not. Personally I prefer it that way because if I knew I would be criticizing everything I play

I play guitar (classic and electric) pretty descently. Can't say that I'm a musician though. I got some stuff writen down but never played them live. Getting organized with a group seems to be the most difficult part. So far, I've tried playing with a group, which dramatically broke up after everybody in it (except me and the drummer) fought with each other , and I occationally play with a friend of mine (who btw plays fantastic guitar) but it's hard to organize it because afterall, we both have different schedules and when we meet, we preffer hanging out and going for bar touring.
Lately, I was thinking about making a turn to electronic means as well. I love goa and dark trance, plus, you don't need another soul to get serious about it. You can creat it on your own! (If you learn to use all these programmes by heart off course, but after I'm done with my anime and comic project, I'm very willing to try).

I play trumpet, keyboards (piano, synthesizers, and the like), drums, french horn, guitar, and sing. Now with all of that said, the music that I currently play is not considered to be music by many. I currently play a style of music called, "Industrial". Electronic Industrial, to be specific. All music is recorded direct-to-computer using computer software instruments (mostly, VST/VSTi synthesizers). Vocals are then added, using various odd effects that are usually not reserved for vocals - distortion, heavy phasers and flangers, etc. I use my dreams as an inspiration for the music I write. Lately, I've had a lot of politically-charged dreams, so my newest album has a heavy political theme to it. If anybody wishes to listen, my web link should have some examples. If not, there will be some examples up, really soon...

I play piano and oboe!! I've been playing oboe for about four years now. I did regions Junior Disctict festival for the past two years and I'm shooting for seniors this year! I'm starting 9th grade, so it will be tough to get in with all those seniors, but I'm hoping I can pull it off! I'm going to UMAS Lowell this summer for a band camp and we're playing "Poet and Peasant". I'm excited!
I've been at piano for nearly five years now. I don't do many festivals and stuff with piano like oboe. It's more of a side thing for me. My real focus it oboe because i want to go to college for it and become a professional oboist.
So... music is pretty munch my life

I can read and write sheet music for the piano but I have a hard time actually playing it haha I make music using my computer haha. I've got a record collection that I sample sounds from and add beats and others sounds to whatever I sampled. I'm actually starting to make CD's of my music

I have a band called South Pacific in which I write the lyrics and all the instrumental parts. I also sing and play guitar/piano for the band. We have a bassist and a second pianist in the band, but don't have a drummer and don't plan on getting one.
