I thought your mind couldn't .....

Recently I've been working with my awareness in lucid dreams. Many times throughout the day I do a double take of the time, or words I see so that it becomes a pattern and I continue the behavior in my dreams. This has worked well thus far and resulted in about a dozen lucid dreams in which I have moderate control of the content. But last night something tipped me off that I was dreaming so I came up to a sign on a path and did a double take of it to assure my mind I was dreaming and gain control of the dream. BUT the words on the sign didn't change! I looked and looked back about 4 times and it stayed the same. I panicked and my mind drew up some bad scenarios which came to life. I ended up being chased through the woods by an angry mother giraffe!
I'm sure the sign had meaning if it was so stubborn to not change, but I thought the mind couldn't hold those words in place like that?

Words is one check that almost always fails for me. I've read several places to do multiple checks at a time, and I try to do different kinds of checks after I did 3 visual checks that all failed in a dream (my hands, a digital clock and the address on a nearby envelope all looked normal). I usually start by looking at my hands (which has been the most reliable check for me), then try to push my fingers through my palm and then breathe while pinching my nose.

In a dream, however, I notice I don't always end up doing the same checks I do when I'm awake. It's something I'm definitely trying to turn into a check itself.
