I'm 20 and I have imaginary friends

Postby MajesticLozzA II on Thu Sep 08, 2011 1:05 pm

Ever since I was 13, I've had these imaginary friends....and I have quite a lot. About 9 of them. People say adults with imaginary friends are extremely weird. But the main reason why is because I feel too alone and I'm socially awkward with real people. I don't know if it's anything to do with my autism, though in a book it said people with autism have a strong imagination than real people.

I tend to talk to them when no one is around. I'm very close to one of them who I had met last year. He's been helping me with my depression and he makes me happy. We have a laugh and talk all the time and he makes me feel very less alone. The others I've had for years and each of them have helped me through loads.

I only have 2 friends so I've been very upset because I have no social life and that I feel like a boring person. Though with my imaginary friends, they are such a laugh, it's like I'm their mom or younger sister.

Am I weird? Or is it normal because of my condition of feeling alone?

It is only an issue if having these imaginary friends hamper you from making real life friends and adds to any anti-social behaviors.
And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me

They don't really control my behaviour, they're not like Drop Dead Fred kind of imaginary friends, they're more mature and real. The reason I don't have friends is mostly because I don't trust people due to previous issues with people. I'm no longer at college and I didn't make a lot of friends there and I'm quite private. I've always been shy around new people.

Do ya work, go to school?
Do you only talk with them in private, never in public?
If it isn't hurting you, your life, or others around ya, what is the harm?

I'm looking for work and I don't go to school or college (i finished college in July) I talk to them in my mind in public though at home or anywhere where no one is around I talk to them.

There isn't really any harm at all. The only thing that hurts is the fact that I don't have a circle or group of friends so it makes me feel more alone. But I like having imaginary friends to make me feel less alone and more acknowledged by something.

Can you describe the personalities of some of your favorite imaginary friends?

I don't have a particular favourite but all I can say is, all of them have one thing in common, they are positive people with part adult maturity but also have a fun side that can be a little mad. Like for example; I''d imagine them racing around in trolleys in supermarkets or playing football in the fields or playing in the park.

I have 8 guys and 1 female imaginary friends.

one of them helps me with my relationship issues, one of them helps me with social skills and any advice on boys, the only female imaginary friend helps me with my confidence and looks, one of them has great knowledge and helps me learn, one of them helps my self esteem and always tells me to take pride in myself, one of them likes to help me cook and always jokes around, one of them helps me with literature and speaking (because I find it hard to talk to people), one of them helps me with gadgets and music, and the final friend is my comfort friend who I turn to when in pain and upset and I feel really close to him.

I love them all and have had them (except the one) for 7 years now. :)

:) thank you! That's made me feel better. At the moment I'm having a hard time because I have lots going on, and my fiance doesn't usually like me talking to guys but so long as he knows I'm commited to him and no one else, I should be fine having friends.

My only problem is that I don't trust people easy due to bad experiences with people from the past.

I talk to myself all the time, it helps relive stress. I have a small circle of friends, but I mostly talk to myself because they are busy. When they get the time though we hang out and have a laugh. I don't hide how I am, I'm just myself if they don't like it then they don't have to be my friend. :D
sometimes fantasy over takes life, but then beliving in fantasy makes life enjoyable, but never forget reailty or you may lose touch of yourself.

You shouldn't care about what others think that much but since you bought it up maybe you do want to socialize with real people instead of your imaginary friends but it's ok on wanting to i understand completely but don't let others make you seem like you are a freak or something im sure alot of other people do worst than having imaginary friends...so you just be you and if want to start socializing with people there are tons of ways-join a book club,go out more often,if you have a job try socializing with your co-workers etc.Possibly 1000 ways since there are 6 billion of us ;)

do you only see these 7 people? have you ever thought that maybe you have a sensitive 'third eye?" i would suggest to write, instead of openly talking about them write about them then read what you have wrote and see if it makes sense to you or reflect on how it makes you feel to read what you have wrote. I would also suggest to give yourself activities, have your fiance join in or do something productive, make something, do something get involved in something that seems important to you or start up some arts and crafts. Use that unique mind of yours--PAINT! :excited:

I was going to suggest this, maybe your third eye is open and your imaginary friends are spirit guides. But since you haven't posted this in the spirituality forum, you are probably not interested in that sort of stuff. People with open third eyes can be so creative, you could try expressing yourself through art, doesn't have to be about painting things, there are other things like sculpting or even playing music.

I am interested in spirituality and mentalism related things. I have written things to express myself and I don't know about the third eye so I may look into that. And maybe I could use art as an expression as well as writing

On the topic of spirit guides. That is the first thing I thought of when I read your post. I get messages from mine all the time. It's like the voice in your head when you're reading, only it's not really you. Especially if they're helping you through things, it's gotta be. At least some of the time.

It's very comforting. Especially during hard times. I love them. They're like my older brothers and sister.

I do as well. They helped me out with my driving lessons until I passed. They give me relationship advice and anything I am unsure of I ask them :)
